What Makes a Qigong Practice Successful?

There are many factors for having a Qigong (Chi Kung) practice that is successful; that yields results. The first factor is finding a good Qigong instructor. There are many clues that indicate a good instructor. The best instructors will have practiced Qigong for at least several years, more the better. Next, a good Qigong instructor will naturally talk about their Qigong teacher(s). If they don't  mention their teacher, ask them about them. If they refuse to talk about their teacher, beware. They should be honored to talk about the training, experience and wisdom of their teachers. You don't want to learn Qigong from someone that learned Qigong from a book. I have been fortunate to have studied with many great Qigong Masters; most recently Master Tianyou Hao and Master Mingtong Gu (I'm still studying with Master Gu).

Practice is another important factor. It is important to practice consistently and daily. It is the consistent repetition of Qigong that will help you to get the feeling of Qi (Chi) and build Qi in the body. The feeling of Qi is different for everyone. It may feel like a warmth in the body, a movement, a tingling, an expanding feeling, or many other sensations. Keep an open mind. Everyone progresses in their Qigong training at their own pace. Some may feel Qi after only a few weeks and some may take several months or longer. Don't focus on any sensation, just keep practicing. It will happen when it is time.

Another factor for a successful practice is to find a space where you can have peace and quiet. Interruptions will only distract you and prevent you from making real progress. Turn off the cell phones, TV, radio and any and all other distractions. And finally, if possible, practice with other like mind people. Having a support system where people help to motivate each other is important. And the more people that practice, the stronger the Chi  Field,  which will serve to enhance the feeling of Qi and will also enhance the healing potential for those in need of healing. I will discuss the Chi Field in a future article.
