Qigong Roots

Qigong has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Qigong has a written history of  more than 3000 years. Some scholars suspect Qigong has been around for 5000 years. Qigong was written about in "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine" around 3000 years ago. This book describes what is known today as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Some regard Qigong as the Grandfather of TCM.

There are five main branches of Qigong: Taoist (Daoist), Buddhist, Confucian, Martial and Medical. Each of these branches bring a distinct focus to Qigong. Taoist Qigong focuses on health, longevity and immortality. Buddhist Qigong focuses on enlightenment. Confucian Qigong focuses on morality and living in a harmonious society. Martial Qigong focuses on building strength and power for martial arts. Medical Qigong focuses on self healing and the healing of others. Some styles blend some or all of these to create unique systems.

According to my Qigong Master, there are at more than 35,000 forms of Qigong and over 120 different systems. Some forms emphasize external exercise for increasing the energy flow in the body (Wei Dan) and others emphasize more inner or quiet forms (breathing and meditation) for getting and increasing energy flow (Nei Dan). The term Qigong is a very new term for the practice. Originally, the internal forms were referred to as "Tu Na", which translates as "Exhale Inhale". Exercises were later added to the practice for improving health conditions.

Qigong Therapy

When a practitioner of Qigong uses energy and mind power to heal others, it is referred to as Qigong Therapy. Qigong Therapy requires special training to learn to tap into the Universal Qi, more specifically the Healing Qi (Chi) Field for the purpose of healing others. The practitioner does not deplete their own energy when done properly. This video demonstrates that with proper Qigong mind power and body training, it is possible to not only heal yourself, but to heal others. This healing took place in a "medicine-less" Qigong hospital in China. It was founded by Dr. Pang Ming, who developed a form of Qigong, known as Zhineng Qigong, which translates in English as "Wisdom Healing Qigong" (also known as Chi-Lel TM). I had the great fortune to go to a Qigong retreat in California to learn about this form of Qigong from Qigong Master Mingtong Gu.

Abdominal Breathing

Breathing exercises reduce your stress, lower your heart rate, reduce your blood pressure and increase your blood and energy circulation. Proper breathing also helps to detoxify your body and restore your energy reserve.

Breathing deeply into your abdomen allows the lungs to expand more fully during inhalation, allowing more oxygen to be absorbed. A complete exhalation allows for more efficient removal of carbon dioxide (CO2). Abdominal breathing massages the internal organs, strengthens them and increases the energy flow in the organs and throughout the body.

A simple exercise that you can do to learn how to do abdominal breathing is to put your hand on your stomach. As you inhale, your hand should move outward. As you exhale, your hand should move inward. At first, you may use your hand to help you focus on your abdominal breath. Eventually, you should be able to do it without your hands. Proper abdominal breathing should be slow, long, thin, even and soft.

Qigong Teaches Mind and Body Relaxation

One of the most important aspects you will learn as part of Qigong is relaxation. Relaxing is important to activate the healing response. Relaxing means to let go of tension and stress that is held in the body. It also means to let go of tension and stress in the mind. Relaxing the mind allows for a deeper state of relaxation to occur in the body. So what exactly does it mean to relax your mind? The human mind is typically busy thinking tens of thousands of thoughts each day, most of which are the same thoughts day after day. On top of that, people are stressed out from work, the bills, the kids, their health issues, their families, etc. If you are experiencing similar thoughts, you may find it difficult to turn these thoughts off. Some have difficulty sleeping because they can shut down the thoughts and worries. If you learn Qigong, you will effective techniques to quieting your busy mind. Here's a few techniques. The first technique is to concentrate on your breathing. Focus on each inhalation and exhalation. You can even count your breath cycles. Inhale, exhale, one, inhale, exhale, two, inhale, exhale, three, and continuing for five minutes or more. Another simple technique is to repeat a mantra. That is to repeat a word or phrase over and over again. The word or phrase can be as simple as "calm" or "calm, peace, relax" or it can be a complete sentence like: "I am calm, peaceful and relaxed in all situations". Just make sure it is something positive and empowering. Keep in mind that your mind may wander, especially in the beginning. If this happens, just bring your awareness back to you technique (count, mantra, etc). It is important to practice one of these techniques consistently one or more times each day. The more you practice, the quicker you will notice the results of focusing and calming your mind. As you learn to calm and quiet your mind, you will begin to feel less stress. This is a sign your mind is relaxing. Now it will be much easier to relax your body. Next, you can use a simple progressive relaxation technique to relax your body. You can start with your head; put your attention on your face and head. Imagine all tension releasing from your head. You can lightly tense your head and face and release. Feel the tension melting away. Repeat for your neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, back, abdomen, pelvis, legs, feet, etc. You can spend extra time in areas that do not release. Once you finish at your feet, repeat the entire process. Repeat this three times. Practice this at least once a day following a technique to calm and quiet your mind. It is important to find a quiet place for your practice where you won't be interrupted. Turn off your cell phone, forget about Facebook, take a break from your emails. Sit in a comfortable chair. You can close your eyes, but don't fall asleep. If you tend to fall asleep, then slightly open your eyes. These simple techniques are quite effective. There are many other techniques in Qigong for training the mind and body to relax. Seek out a Qigong instructor if you want more information.

What Makes a Qigong Practice Successful?

There are many factors for having a Qigong (Chi Kung) practice that is successful; that yields results. The first factor is finding a good Qigong instructor. There are many clues that indicate a good instructor. The best instructors will have practiced Qigong for at least several years, more the better. Next, a good Qigong instructor will naturally talk about their Qigong teacher(s). If they don't  mention their teacher, ask them about them. If they refuse to talk about their teacher, beware. They should be honored to talk about the training, experience and wisdom of their teachers. You don't want to learn Qigong from someone that learned Qigong from a book. I have been fortunate to have studied with many great Qigong Masters; most recently Master Tianyou Hao and Master Mingtong Gu (I'm still studying with Master Gu).

Practice is another important factor. It is important to practice consistently and daily. It is the consistent repetition of Qigong that will help you to get the feeling of Qi (Chi) and build Qi in the body. The feeling of Qi is different for everyone. It may feel like a warmth in the body, a movement, a tingling, an expanding feeling, or many other sensations. Keep an open mind. Everyone progresses in their Qigong training at their own pace. Some may feel Qi after only a few weeks and some may take several months or longer. Don't focus on any sensation, just keep practicing. It will happen when it is time.

Another factor for a successful practice is to find a space where you can have peace and quiet. Interruptions will only distract you and prevent you from making real progress. Turn off the cell phones, TV, radio and any and all other distractions. And finally, if possible, practice with other like mind people. Having a support system where people help to motivate each other is important. And the more people that practice, the stronger the Chi  Field,  which will serve to enhance the feeling of Qi and will also enhance the healing potential for those in need of healing. I will discuss the Chi Field in a future article.

What is Qigong?

Qigong is a general term for Chinese meditations and exercises that are used to improve and maintain good health and promote longevity. Qi is the life force or energy within all living things. While Qi is actually in everything, living and non-living, we will keep this discussion focused on the energy within humans. Gong refers to ones ability or skill. Thus, Qigong means Qi ability. A person that practices Qigong develops the ability to work with and improve their own Qi, thus improving their health.

Qigong has been around for over three thousand years and  has its roots in Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM). In fact, Qigong is often referred to as the Grandfather of TCM. There are more than 35,000 forms of Qigong around the world. According to the theory of TCM, disease occurs in the human body when the Qi flow is disturbed (excess, deficient or blocked). The practice of Qigong will help to smooth out the flow of Qi in the body, thus restoring balance and improving one's health.

Qigong has gotten much attention over the last 20 years or so in the US and has been featured on PBS documentaries and even more recently on more mainstream shows like the Dr Oz show. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz M.D., "If you want to be healthy and live to 100, do Qigong." I invite you to explore Qigong with me and see for yourself what benefits come from practicing Qigong.
